To begin with, we just -- and honestly, this was like 15 hours ago -- elected a liberal Democrat to the presidency.
Beyond that -- the support Republicans often provide for this argument is that when asked, more people identify themselves as "conservative" than as "liberal." Well, duh. The GOP spent 30 years turning the word "liberal" into a swear word. Because we were limp and ineffectual, it worked. "Liberal" is a bad word in America right now. You'll meet a ton of conservative Democrats these days. You might even be one. Seen a "liberal Republican" lately? Not since Eisenhower's day. "Liberal Republicans" are so afraid themselves of the word "liberal" that they have rebranded themselves "moderate Republicans." The media and the Democrats themselves have bought into this.
If we really want to poll on it, we need to use a different word -- "progressive" is one, although I'm open to other suggestions -- or just ask questions about different issues and how people feel. When we've done that already, they've revealed that this is -- if not a center-left country -- then at least simply a centrist country.
So... with a 12-hour break for celebration... I'm once again back on patrol: Quit lying, Republicans.
