Having grown up in Pittsburgh, I have seen a city go from days filled with smoke and stench from the mills (when people would visit they would say "What is that smell" and I would say "What smell" I did not notice. to a city that is no longer smoky - & I believe that Pittsburgh is changing again because of the young people, because of the universities. You know Pittsburgh boasts of the largest slovak population other than Czech, why? because they all came and settled in one area - growing up a lot of the kids in the early years of a Catholic grammer school cam from Italy, they could barely speak English - they all lived on the same few streets - all the black kids lived on their own streets - all of the people seemed to be Catholic - the same - other cities (not so much Pittsburgh I do not think)have Asians living in the same part of town - Jewish people living in the same part of town - like with like - not any excuse for racism though - the people of Pittsburgh seeem like good people - hard working, friendly, caring deeply for their families, not mean , in work environments with all types of people, but going home to their own - does this boil down to habit? familiarity? My family is scattering all over the country, I hate it!! Why? Because I want to be like all the other Pittsburgh families, like it was when I grew up and my kids grew up - Grandmas, Grandpas, Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, Nephews all here for birthday cake and ice cream, Thanksgiving dinners, Christmases with the exchanging of socks for gifts - habits, familiarity, routine, maybe that is what most of it boils down to in Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania -- not always hatred. The "n" word is terrible, but other words used to exist, Dago, Hunkie, words that designated you as something but not with hatred - I remember saying Hunkie? Yep and proud of it! This is changing here, because of the young people, we saw what what was wrong with us and more so with our parents but did not teach it. I feel badly that Western Pennsylvania is being seen nationwide as filled with hatred because I do not think that is so

Daley cutting 240 city jobs

Facing a major budget deficit, Mayor Richard Daley said today he will cut nearly 240 jobs by combining several City Hall departments, from human services to planning.

The cuts will be accomplished through layoffs and attrition, city officials said. The announcement comes less than a week before Daley is scheduled to introduce his 2009 city budget.

The mayor had previously confirmed he will lay off about 1,000 city workers as he attempts to close a budget hole estimated at more than $400 million. It was not immediately clear whether the cuts announced today are part of that total.

Age is one thing - but bad health can impair anyone at any age... and the state of his health is a more significant factor in how he will be able to handle the pressures of his office, more than just how old he is.

Except in the case of W where neither health NOR age can be used as an excuse...

I'd feel sorry for the press who would have to read through all that medical history. When they released the previous 3 years worth of records, it was something like 2,000 pages long! I can only imagine what his whole medical history would look like - they'd have to bring back the traveling book mobile just to carry all of it.

AND if McCain's Veep choice wasn't so irresponsible, I think his records would matter less - but with the prospect of Palin at the helm, it becomes absolutely imperative for the voting public to know exactly what they could be getting themselves into.

I think that is correct. Florida will turn before Ohio. Certainly a state with a more diverse population. I have a friend who lives in North Miami and works at the offices of the Mayor. She has many friends there who have friends and relatives in Iraq. These soldiers are emailing home and encouraging all to vote for Obama. They do not want to be there.
